Orbis is a seven-storey apartment building located in South Melbourne, toward the northern end of the beautiful Albert Park Lake. Doogood Surface Coatings was contracted to paint the composite façade components using a complex Dulux Quantum FX system.
To achieve this stunning finish, all surfaces of the fibreglass composite material were carefully filled and sanded by hand, before application of one to two coats of Dulux Durepon Sandable Primer with more hand sanding required between coats. They were then spray painted in Dulux Quantum FX, a bright metallic polyurethane with reflective metallic flakes. This was then finished with a coat of Quantum Clearcoat, a high gloss clear polyurethane that provides depth of colour along with enhanced metallic effect and UV protection.
The result is this spectacular golden façade, which was designed by architects to create the impression of giant spheres being pressed into it, creating huge convex curves with jutting corners between them.
The degree of difficulty involved in applying this system to such large and awkward shapes was recognised by all involved in the project, with Dulux even featuring it on the front cover of their new Quantum FX catalogue!
